The government is likely to increase the ceiling on house rebuilding grants announced by the government for the survivors of last year’s earthquake. The government was working to scale up the grants by Rs 100,000. Earlier, the Sushil Koirala-led government had decided to provide Rs 200,000 each to those individuals who were rendered homeless by the disaster. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘ Prachanda’ informed about this at the meeting of Development Committee of the Legislature-Parliament today. The government was likely to come up with the decision of increasing the house rebuilding assistance by Rs 100,000 within a week. Stating that he was closely observing the implementation of the Cabinet decisions through his secretariat, the Prime Minister directed the Nepal Reconstruction Authority (NRA) to distribute the grants to the eligible people soon. He directed the NRA officials not to dilly dally in the distribution of grants. Lawmakers, Chief Secretary Dr Som Lal Subedi, government secretaries, National Planning Commission Vice-Chair and NRA executive officer Sushil Gyawali were present in the meeting. “Politicization in the reconstruction drive is highly discouraged,” he added. Preparations for election within mid-September On the occasion, the Prime Minister apprised the meeting about the government plan to create political atmosphere by mid-September conducive for holding local on time. Discussions were going on at a high political-level regarding this, he added.
